Tonight’s game is the first of just two meetings between the Petes and Firebirds, and the only one at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. The Firebirds, who have lost their last 7 games and are 1-8-1-0 in their last 10, will host the Petes in Flint in early March for their final match up of the season.
A result of their young roster, Flint has two first-year players in the OHL’s top twenty rookie scorers. Whitby native Jacob Winterton, who was selected by Flint in 2017 in the 10th round, is 11th among rookies with 6 goals and 7 assists in 32 games. Vladislav Kolyachonok, a product of Belarus who is a projected pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, is 18th with 11 assists. Petes rookie Erik Cermak is also in the top twenty, ranked 15th, with 4 goals and 7 assists.
Hunter Jones, who today, along with Nick Robertson, was selected to take part in the CHL Top Prospects game in Red Deer, Alberta in January, remains in the top five of many statistical categories among league netminders. He is 1st in saves (816), 2nd in minutes (1544), 4th in wins (16), and 5th in save percentage (0.921).
Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Semyon Der-Arguchintsev is riding a 7 game point streak in which he has recorded 3 goals, 8 assists, and 11 points.
