The Petes wrapped up pre-season play with a 4-1 loss to the east division rival Oshawa Generals in Port Perry on Sunday night, finishing the exhibition season with a 2-3 record.
The visitors were assessed the first infraction of the game midway through the first period, but a strong penalty kill effort kept the Generals off the board.
Both teams were struggling to get anything going, a result of tight play and clogging of lanes by the opposition.
Oshawa, though, was soon able to open scoring. Dylan Robinson and Tyler Tullio connected to feed Nando Eggenberger in front of the net, making it 1-0 Generals 10:36 into the game.
Peterborough suffered a delay of game call with the clock winding down in the frame, but were again successful in keeping home team at bay while maintaining a 13-10 lead on the shot clock.
It didn’t take the Generals long to add to the scoresheet as Eric Henderson found Joe Rupoli on the point, who rifled the puck past Hunter Jones. Robinson earned the secondary assist.
The maroon and white were given a four minute chance at cutting into Oshawa’s lead, but instead the Generals dug the Petes into a deeper deficit. On a 2-on-1 short handed rush, Tullio and Nick Wong played give and go as they headed down the ice, with Tullio finishing off the play to bring the score to 3-0.
Oshawa further gained control of the board with just under four minutes of play remaining in the middle stanza. Robinson secured his third point, and first goal, of the night with help from Danil Antropov and Mitchell Brewer.
Their dominance was evident on the shot clock, as well, as they were out-shooting the Petes 24-20 after two periods.
The rough and tumble that fans have come to expect between these rivals made its presence known the in the third, as extracurricular activities after the whistles were more prevalent. Resulting 4-on-4 play nearly saw the Generals extend their lead, but the net was deemed off its moorings much to the chagrin of now-netminder Tye Austin.
With a rival General in the box, the Petes finally cracked the scoreboard 6:31 into the final period when 2018 second round pick Cam Butler notched his first of the pre-season. The man-advantage marker was assisted by Chris Paquette and Nick Robertson.
Paquette and Robertson nearly connected again mid-way through the frame, but were denied by Oshawa goaltender Cole Ceci.
The rough stuff continued late in the period, keeping some Petes in the sin bin for most of the final five minutes and preventing any more Petes goals.
Final shots were 39-27 in favour of the Generals; Tye Austin turned aside all 7 shots he faced in the third.
