Nikita Korostelev to Return to Peterborough Petes
In the early stages of the 2017-18 OHL season, no one has questioned the offensive ability of the Peterborough Petes. If there were any doubters, they were silenced on Monday as General Manager Mike Oke announced that Nikita Korostelev will return to the Electric City after being reassigned by the AHL’s Toronto Marlies. Korostelev has spent the past several weeks with the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, attending Leafs and Marlies training camps.
Korostelev, a 6’1”, 201lbs winger from Moscow was acquired by the Petes from the Sarnia Sting in January. He made an immediate impact with his new team, scoring 12 goals and 17 assists for 29 points in just 24 games, giving him 64 points in total in the 2016-17 campaign. “Koro” was eighth in the Eastern Conference in total scoring.
“I had a really great experience at Maple Leafs and Marlies camps, and I have nothing but great things to say about their organization,” commented Korostelev. “With that said, I’m excited to come back to Peterborough. In speaking with my agent and my family, this is the best decision for me, and I’m looking forward to working with my teammates to win more games and go deeper in the playoffs with the Petes.”
“We are excited to welcome Nikita back to Peterborough. He is a strong presence in all three zones, and we expect him to have an impact on and off the ice for our club,” noted Oke.

Korostelev’s return puts the Petes roster at four active overage players. The team will not need to cut that number down to three until January 9.
The Russian-born sniper played minor hockey with the Vaughan Kings and Toronto Jr. Canadiens in the GTHL before being drafted by the Sting 9th overall in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection. He was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 7th round, 185th overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.
Korostelev is expected to participate in practice this week, and may be in the lineup on Thursday as the Petes host the Flint Firebirds at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.
