Wells makes franchise history with goal

Ontario Hockey League

Edmonton Oilers prospect Dylan Wells added his name to the Peterborough Petes record books on Thursday, becoming the first goaltender in the lengthy history of the franchise to score a goal.

Wells hit the open net from behind his own goal line with 42 seconds remaining in the third period, solidifying a 6-2 victory in Game 4 as the Petes completed an Eastern Conference Semi-Final sweep of the Kingston Frontenacs.

The goal is the ninth by a goaltender in OHL history and the first since London’s Tyler Parsons scored in a less orthodox fashion on October 9, 2015 against Sudbury. It also marks the fourth playoff goal scored by a goaltender, an event that last occurred when Niagara’s Mark Visentin scored a shorthanded empty netter against the Ottawa 67’s on April 25, 2012.

Wells and the Petes are off to the Eastern Conference Final for the first time since they last won an OHL Championship in 2006.

The Petes remain as the only undefeated team in the OHL Playoffs, off to their first 8-0 start since 1989-90 when they swept the Belleville Bulls and Ottawa 67’s in the opening two rounds.
