Amanda McInnes is Recognized as This Weeks Peterborough Petes Overtime Teacher

Amanda McInnes, a Grade 7 and 8 teacher at St. Catherine Catholic Elementary School in Peterborough, is recognized as this week’s Petes Overtime Teacher. The Petes want to celebrate teachers who have gone above and beyond for their students during these unprecedented times.
The St. Catherine Catholic Elementary School educator has gone above and beyond what is required of her by developing a science club for elementary school students and helping them with their competition preparation. Despite the challenges of a virtual Peterborough Regional Science Fair (PRSF) in April, 2021 she encouraged her students to participate and almost 30% of the entrants were students from her school. At the virtual Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF) last month, an annual event with participants chosen from 104 Regions from all provinces and territories across the country, three of five Peterborough representatives had a connection to McInnes. Only once before has Peterborough ever won the top prize at the CWSF however, thanks to McInnes and her students, the city took home not only the top prize, but the runner up prize as well, this year.
Nominator Jill Emery says “Amanda McInnes redefines going above and beyond as a teacher. The energy and enthusiasm she puts forward to ensure her students excel inside and outside the classroom is extraordinary. She is compassionate, patient, intelligent and knows how to read students precisely in terms of encouraging them to pursue their interests and increase their knowledge.”
Each week the Petes will recognize and celebrate one teacher or educational assistant from the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board or Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland and Clarington Catholic School Board, for the additional time and effort they have put in during the pandemic to ensure the success of their students.
The Petes welcome students, parents and other members of the community to nominate deserving teachers or educational assistants by filling out this form. The Petes will be accepting nominations and recognizing one teacher per week until Thursday, June 17. A voting period will open up from Saturday, June 19 at 8:00 am until Monday, June 21 at 8:00 pm to crown the ultimate Overtime Teacher. The winning teacher will receive an amazing Petes prize package that includes a Zoom call with Petes Head Coach Rob Wilson and goaltenders Tye Austin and Michael Simpson for their students, in addition to two tickets to the Petes home opener.
