Mayer has Three Assists as Petes End Road Trip With a Win in St. Catharines

On Sunday, March 19, the Petes traveled to St. Catharines to take on the Niagara IceDogs for the final time this season. The Maroon and White would be looking to wrap up a tough road trip with a win to put them two points clear of the Hamilton Bulldogs for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. The Petes have played the IceDogs very well this season, out scoring them 19-4 in three games earlier this year. It’s been a busy series for both of the IceDogs goaltenders this season against Peterborough, with the Petes firing a total of 182 shots at Niagara in their three matchups.

The first period did not start the way the Petes were hoping. Just over a minute into the game, the IceDogs jumped out to an early lead on a goal from Daniel Michaud. Niagara would hold onto that lead for almost 14 minutes before Peterborough got comfortable. With just over four minutes remaining in the first period, Chase Stillman tipped home a Sam Mayer shot to tie the game at 1-1. That goal would be the spark that Peterborough needed, as they went on to score two more goals in 92 seconds to take a 3-1 lead into the break. The goals came from Tommy Purdeller and Avery Hayes, who scored his 43rd of the season. Brennan Othmann would pick up an assist on the Hayes goal, recording his 100th career OHL assist.

The second period was all Peterborough from the drop of the puck. Gavin White scored his 12th of the season just 47 seconds into the middle frame. It was another major milestone on the day as the goal was White’s 100th career OHL point. Two minutes after that, Connor Lockhart scored on the powerplay to make it 5-1 Petes. Peterborough would go on to fire 30 shots at Niagara in the second, leading to a 45 shot total through two periods. The Petes entered the final 20 leading the IceDogs 5-1.

The third period would see Niagara get one back early on a goal by Alex Assadourian, but that would be all as the Petes won the game by a score of 5-2.

Sam Mayer led the way for the Petes with three assists, while Tucker Robertson added two. Chase Stillman, Tommy Purdeller, Avery Hayes, and Gavin White all scored for the Petes, and Owen Beck, Jonathan Melee, and Brennan Othmann all picked up an assist. Liam Sztuska stopped 26/28 for his 10th win of the season.

The Petes are back in action on Thursday for their final home game of the season against the Ottawa 67’s. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Fans can get tickets by clicking here, or by contacting the PMC Grant Thornton Box Office in person or at (705) 743-3561.
