Peterborough Petes to Host PWHPA Game at the PMC

The Peterborough Petes announced during a press conference on December 14 that they will be hosting a Professional Women’s Hockey Player’s Association (PWHPA) game on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at the Peterborough Memorial Centre (PMC). 

Team Sonnet, PWHPA’s Toronto hub, and Team Harvey’s, PWHPA’s Montreal hub, will compete against each other in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity game inside the square corners. Fans can witness some of hockey’s finest athletes put their skills to the test at the PMC, just days after the 2022 Olympic Women’s Hockey Gold Medal Game in Beijing. 

“It’s an absolute honour to host these elite athletes at the PMC in the new year,” said Shelbi Kilcollins, Petes’ Director of Marketing & Growth. “The opportunity to collaborate alongside the PWHPA is a long-time dream for the Peterborough Petes.”

Hockey Hall of Inductee and Olympic gold medalist, and PWHPA Chairperson, Jayna Hefford attended today’s conference along with OHL Commissioner, David Branch, Petes General Manager, Michael Oke, Peterborough Mayor, Diane Therrien, goaltender for Team Sonnett representing the PWHPA’s Toronto Hub, Kassidy Sauve, and forward with the U15 AA Peterborough Ice Kats, Molly Farace.

The PWHPA was founded in May 2019 following the dissolution of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League with the purpose of dedicating of advocating for the promotion of professional women’s ice hockey and the goal of creating a sustainable professional league for women’s ice hockey in North America. The association maintains five satellite hubs in Boston, Calgary, Minnesota, Montreal, and Toronto and houses the top hockey players in the world including most of which who you will see at the upcoming Olympics like Marie Philip-Poulin, Hilary Knight, Sarah Nurse, Natalie Spooner, Jill Saulnier, and Kendall Coyne Schofield. 

Over the last three years, the PWHPA has executed a variety of showcases through the Secret Dream Gap Tour including those which were partnered with the NHL’s New York Rangers and Toronto Maples Leafs, and regional games in cities like Kingston to bring professional women’s hockey to fans everywhere.
