USA Hockey announced Monday that Peterborough Petes forward Nick Robertson has been selected to represent the United States at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup from August 6-11 in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta.
Robertson, who was selected in the 1st round, 16th overall by the Petes in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection, is one of twenty-one players named to the team from USA Hockey’s Boys Select 17 Player Development Camp that took place last week in Amherst, New York.
“I’m extremely honoured to get the opportunity to represent my country at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup,” commented Robertson. “It was a long week of tryouts and getting used to different teammates, but it was a great experience that was well worth it.”
“I’ve never played with the American flag on my chest before, so it’s very exciting,” Robertson added. “I’m confident in the group we have going to Alberta, and look forward to doing my best to help us bring home the gold.”
Robertson recorded 15 goals, 18 assists, and 33 points in his first season in Peterborough, and is the first Pete to represent the United States at the tournament since Austin Watson in 2009. The most recent Petes to take part in the tournament include Gleb Babintsev (Russia; 2017), Matyas Svoboda (2016; Czech Republic; Gold), and Dylan Wells (Canada; 2015; Gold)
Tyler Paquette, a Petes prospect selected in the 13th round, 255th overall in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection, has also been named to USA’s roster.
Newly rebranded as the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, the tournament is an annual event held each August for national under-18 teams around the world including Canada, USA, Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, and Switzerland. It is the first major event on the scouting calendar each season for NHL talent evaluators.
